A win and a good match by Abela

Matthew Abela, Sam Cassar and Mark Abela are currently participating in two different international tournaments. Matthew Abela participating in the Czech KaBal International Series and Sam Cassar and Mark Abela in the Israel Junior 2018.

Yesterday was an intensive day for all players as they managed to bag a couple of wins. Matthew Abela started his qualifying rounds positively by beating Czech Jiří BUREŠ 21 – 17, 11 – 21, 21 – 12 but then found it difficult against Indian Adrian George and lost 12-21, 16-21. Abela started at par in the first game going to the interval only 9-11 under but then George was too strong in the second part of the game.

In the second game Matthew was closer to his opponent and was 10-11 until interval and then lost the match 16-21. It was a pleasant game to watch and you can relive this game by clicking on the link below.

Positive performances despite playing in older category

In the Mixed Doubles Abela and Panochova found it difficult against the Polish pair Dominik ZIETEK and Wiktoria ADAMEK and lost the match 12-21, 14-21.

In the Junior Tournament in Israel, Sam Cassar, 16 years old, managed to make it to the last 32 in the Under 19 category after winning against Israeli Leon Kugel 21-12, 21-15 and then found it difficult to keep par with Spanish Miguel San Luis where he lost 5-21, 11-21. San Luis is a strength in European Badminton and has a good track record where he made it to the final of the Spanish Junior 2018 and only lost to French Christo Popov in 3 games in the final.

Cassar also had to play round 1 of the Mixed Doubles and managed to move forward to the second round together with his Danish partner Emilie Renee Bjerg Jensen.  Abela had a different experience where he faced strong Jorge Rodriguez from Mexico and lost 8-21, 14-21.
