The European Championships were too hard for Matthew Abela this time round. Playing amongst the top 48 of Europe’s players meant a tough first game, a great experience and learning curve for Matthew Abela. Abela played against world ranked 130th Nick Fransman from the Netherlands and lost in 2 straight games 21-1, 21-5.

The European Championships are being held in Huelva, Spain, hometown of World’s Women’s Singles Number one Carolina Marin and are hosting the best of European Badminton. Abela is the third player who represented Malta on this high level platform after Fiorella Marie Sadowski & Samuel Cali.

Matthew will now head back to the Centre of Excellence in Denmark to continue working on his game and preparing for the upcoming international tournaments. Well done and keep up the good work!
